Olympic weightlifting is a sport in which athletes attempt single explosive strength lifts - mainly the snatch and the clean and jerk - with heavy loads. Olympic barbells and weight plates are weighed in kilograms (KG) and designed with unique specifications to the sport set by its governing body (International Weightlifting Foundation - IWF) for both men's and women's divisions. Olympic barbell sleeves must have smooth rotation to accommodate high velocity lifts and limit torque on the athlete's joints. Olympic weight plates, also known as bumper plates, are coated in rubber with a steel center ring to disperse force when dropped.
