Meet Master Coach Yancy Culp

You all know by now that Master Coach Yancy Culp is our resident Obstacle Course Racing expert. Through our partnership with Yancy, we have developed an OCR training resource, including products designed with OCR training in mind, numerous programming videos, pro-tips, workouts, exclusive blog content and more. The sport of Obstacle Course Racing is still gaining momentum - keep an eye out in 2018 for even more from Power Systems and OCR. When Yancy isn’t on the road with Team Power Systems, he’s running his coaching business, Yancy Camp. Through, Yancy provides online coaching all over the world to many pro level OCR athletes and everyday athletes looking to train for the course. Obstacle Course Racing is the fastest growing participatory sport in the world, and Yancy has competed in every type of OCR ranging from outdoor 24-72 hour races, single day races in the 3-30 mile range, indoor/outdoor short course races in the 10-30min range, and has approximately 25 podium finishes all while in his 40’s.

We have been working Yancy for the past year to provide the fitness community, from enthusiasts to trainers to facility owners, with everything there is to know about the sport of OCR and how to best train for these events.

Simply adding a few key pieces of equipment or adding an OCR boot camp is all it takes to bring OCR to your facility.  Transforming a space in your gym is a small change you can make to your space to have an OCR takeover for unique and fun training, whether that’s a single class or OCR equipment

How Yancy Develops His OCR Training

Obstacle course racing (OCR) is one of the fastest growing recreational and professional sports on the planet! As more and more people get involved with this sport, the most common question becomes, “what is the best way to train for an obstacle course race?” Proper training for an OCR will not only have you ready to perform well out on course during your race but it’ll have you in the best shape of your life!

This kind of race will challenge you both mentally and physically to face and conquer obstacles that will test you in most, if not all, of the following areas:

  • Running – From the start of the race until you arrive at the first obstacle, and transitioning between each obstacle, you’ll be running.
  • Steep Terrain – Many races take place in hilly and mountainous areas. Ascending and descending technical terrain is required at some race locations.
  • Grip and Pull Strength – Numerous obstacles will test your grip & pull strength and endurance (i.e. monkey bars, traverse walls, multi-rigs) Lack of training in this area causes the majority of obstacle failures out on course.
  • Carrying heavy objects – You will most likely encounter one or two obstacles that require you to carry heavy items for various distances. The race directors always seem to place these obstacles in areas with steep terrain so you must carry the weight up and back down the required distance.
