SANDRA: I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I was a chubby kid and a moderately overweight teenager. In my 20s, my dad passed away and I used food as a coping mechanism. Marriage, two kids, and a stressful job later, I weighed more than 300 pounds!
POWER SYSTEMS: What are your favorite ways to keep moving?
SANDRA: I'm a cardio junkie! In addition to teaching cardio dance several times a week, I recently began a weight resistance class (Body Pump by Les Mills) and running! I began training for my first 5K in July 2012 and by the end of the year, I'd participated in four races.
POWER SYSTEMS: What was and is your motivation to stay healthy?
SANDRA: As a 300-pound 40-year-old, I knew I had to do something or I would not be around for my kids. That's what got me started. Now, for the first time in my life, I know what it feels like to push myself physically. I like the challenge and it motivates me to know that I can help other people too.
POWER SYSTEMS: How do you make your REAL life a healthy life?
SANDRA: I never would have believed I would enjoy exercising. But now, I want to move, sweat, and accomplish new goals. I am literally half the person I used to be. And, I like to think the best half remains.
